The Dylan Larkin situation in Detroit may have just taken another major turn.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Florida Panthers are believed to have made an offer to the Detroit Red Wings for Larkin — the longtime captain, Michigan native, and face of the franchise who has suddenly become one of the biggest names on the NHL trade market.
Friedman’s wording matters here. He did not say a trade is done. He did not say Detroit is close to accepting. But he did say he believes Florida has made an offer, and that alone is enough to pour gasoline on a story that was already moving fast.
Because when a team like the Panthers gets involved, people listen.
Florida is not some rebuilding team kicking tires. This is a powerhouse organization that has made a habit of swinging big, playing aggressive, and finding ways to add difference-makers when other teams think the price is too high. If the Panthers are truly trying to pull Larkin out of Detroit, it tells you they see a real opportunity to add another major piece down the middle.
And for Detroit fans, that has to sting.
Larkin is not just another player. He is the captain. He is the hometown star. He was drafted by the Red Wings, developed by the Red Wings, and for years has been the player fans pointed to as the symbol of the rebuild. The hope was always simple: eventually, the losing would end, the Wings would turn the corner, and Larkin would be the one leading them back into the playoffs.
Instead, the conversation has now shifted to whether he may be leading another team on a Stanley Cup run.
That is why this story has hit so hard.
Reuters reported earlier this week that Larkin was believed to have a very short list of teams he would consider, with Florida, Vegas and Minnesota among the clubs connected to him. Larkin’s contract also gives him major control here because of his no-trade protection. In other words, Detroit cannot just ship him anywhere and take the best offer. If this gets serious, Larkin’s preferred destinations matter. A lot.
That is what makes Florida’s reported offer so interesting.
If the Panthers are on Larkin’s list, and if they have already stepped up with an offer, then this is no longer just casual speculation. It becomes a real hockey conversation. What would Florida be willing to give up? What would Steve Yzerman need in return to even consider moving his captain? And how does Detroit sell this to a fan base that has already waited far too long for meaningful playoff hockey?
From Florida’s side, the appeal is obvious.
Larkin brings speed, leadership, playoff-style competitiveness, and legitimate top-six center ability. He plays with pace, he can produce, and he has carried a heavy burden in Detroit for years. Put him on a deeper, more dangerous Panthers roster, and suddenly he is not being asked to be the entire solution. He can simply be a massive part of one.
That is a scary thought for the rest of the Atlantic Division.
For Detroit, though, this is the nightmare scenario. Not only could they lose their captain, but they could potentially watch him join a division rival that already knows how to win. The Panthers have become everything the Red Wings are still trying to become: hard to play against, deep, aggressive, and built for spring hockey.
That contrast is what makes the rumour feel even bigger.
This is not just about a trade offer. This is about where both franchises are right now. Florida is chasing more. Detroit is still trying to figure out how its rebuild reached a point where its captain may want out.
And that is the part Red Wings fans will have a hard time accepting.
Larkin has been patient. He has been loyal. He has carried the jersey through years where the results simply were not good enough. If things have truly reached the point where he would consider leaving, that says a lot about the frustration behind the scenes.
Now the pressure shifts to Yzerman.
If he keeps Larkin, Detroit has to show him there is a real plan to win soon. Not someday. Not eventually. Soon.
If he trades him, the return has to be massive. You do not move a player like Dylan Larkin for a soft package, especially when he is the captain and still has several productive years left. The Red Wings would need pieces that help now, pieces that help later, and maybe most importantly, a package that fans can actually understand.
That is easier said than done.
Florida may have made the first serious noise, but this story feels far from over. Vegas and Minnesota have also been connected to Larkin, and if those are truly the only teams he would consider, Detroit’s options may be limited — but still very interesting.
One thing is clear: this is no longer just a quiet rumour floating around the NHL.
When Elliotte Friedman says he believes Florida has made an offer, the Dylan Larkin situation becomes impossible to ignore.
The Panthers may be trying to pull off another monster move.
The Red Wings may be facing the biggest decision of the Yzerman era.
And Dylan Larkin, the hometown captain who was supposed to help bring Detroit back, may suddenly be closer than ever to wearing a different jersey.
