For a few minutes, it looked like Claude Giroux might be going back to where his NHL story truly exploded.
According to the posts circulating from David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman, there was real noise Friday that Giroux could be returning to Philadelphia. That would have been a massive emotional swing for Flyers fans, considering Giroux spent the best years of his career in Philly and remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
But that door appears to be closing quickly.
Friedman first reported that the Senators were “very much in the Claude Giroux mix,” while adding that nothing was done yet. Minutes later, the tone changed: Giroux is expected to return to Ottawa, with Friedman saying, “He will return to Ottawa, it is getting done.”
That is a big win for the Senators.
Giroux may not be the same player he was during his peak Flyers years, but he is still valuable. He is smart, competitive, reliable, and gives Ottawa another veteran voice in a room that is trying to take the next step. Reuters reported in May that Giroux had 49 points in 82 games this past season with Ottawa, showing he can still contribute offensively while playing meaningful minutes.
For Philadelphia, this one probably stings a little. A Giroux reunion would have been a perfect nostalgia story and a strong leadership add for a young Flyers group. But for Ottawa, keeping him makes sense. He knows the team, he fits the room, and he clearly still has something left.
Life changes quickly in free agency.
For a moment, Giroux to Philly had legs.
Now, it looks like he is staying home in Ottawa.
