The NHL calendar is officially beginning to take shape.
The league has revealed the home-opening matchup for all 32 teams, giving fans their first look at when every building will come alive during the 2026-27 season.
Some teams will open their doors as early as September 29, while Florida fans will have to wait until October 10 to see the Panthers play their first home game.
This is only the first piece of the puzzle. The complete 2026-27 NHL schedule will be released Thursday, July 16 at 1 p.m. ET, including every matchup, road trip, back-to-back and rivalry game.
Original Six Rivalries Start Immediately
The NHL did not waste any time loading the opening week with familiar rivalries.
Toronto will welcome Montreal on September 29, giving the Maple Leafs and Canadiens another chance to begin the season with one of hockey’s oldest battles.
Boston will host the New York Rangers that same night, while Detroit will also welcome the Rangers on October 2.
Chicago’s first home game comes against St. Louis on October 6, another matchup with plenty of history behind it.
There may be new players, new coaches and completely different expectations, but games such as Toronto-Montreal rarely need additional promotion.
Oilers and Canucks Get an Early Home-and-Home
One of the most interesting details is the early showdown between Edmonton and Vancouver.
The Oilers will host the Canucks on September 29, before the two teams travel west for Vancouver’s home opener on October 1.
That means the Canadian rivals will meet twice within the opening days of the season.
Depending on what happens during the offseason, those games could provide an immediate measuring stick for two teams expecting to compete in the Western Conference.
Washington and Pittsburgh Renew the Rivalry
The Capitals will open their home schedule against the Penguins on October 7.
Washington versus Pittsburgh has been one of the defining rivalries of the modern NHL era. Even as both rosters continue changing, the matchup still carries additional weight whenever the teams meet.
It will also provide an early look at where the two Metropolitan Division clubs stand. Are they legitimate playoff contenders, teams in transition or somewhere in between?
Their first meeting may not provide every answer, but it should offer a few clues.
Florida Will Be Everywhere
The Panthers appear repeatedly on the home-opener list—but mostly as the visiting team.
Florida will be the opponent for:
- Anaheim on October 4
- Carolina on September 29
- Los Angeles on October 6
- San Jose on October 1
That creates a demanding early travel schedule and puts Florida in several emotionally charged environments.
Carolina’s home opener should be especially intense. Games between Florida and Carolina have developed into some of the league’s most physical and uncomfortable matchups, and neither side usually needs much time to become engaged.
Florida will finally play its own home opener against Minnesota on October 10, the latest home debut on the list.
Vegas Welcomes Chicago
The Golden Knights will host the Blackhawks on September 29.
Chicago’s young core should make the Blackhawks one of the more fascinating teams to follow, while Vegas remains a club built to compete immediately.
It is the type of matchup that can showcase two very different stages of roster construction: an emerging team trying to take its next step against an established contender with championship expectations.
Ottawa Opens Against Philadelphia
The Senators will play their first home game against the Flyers on October 8.
Ottawa will enter the season with plenty of attention surrounding the direction of the franchise and how its roster responds to an eventful offseason.
Philadelphia should provide a physical opening opponent. The Flyers rarely make games comfortable, and Ottawa will want to establish its identity immediately in front of its home crowd.
It may not be the biggest rivalry on the schedule, but it could be one of the more entertaining home openers.
Seattle and Calgary Trade Visits
Calgary will host Seattle on October 1, before the teams meet again for Seattle’s home opener on October 4.
Much like Edmonton and Vancouver, the Flames and Kraken will see a lot of each other before the season has had time to settle.
Early rematches can create instant tension, particularly if the first game becomes physical or controversial.
Other Home Openers Worth Circling
Several additional games stand out:
Colorado vs. Los Angeles — September 30
Two Western Conference teams with high expectations and no shortage of star power.
New Jersey vs. Philadelphia — October 1
A Metropolitan Division matchup that should immediately test New Jersey’s speed against Philadelphia’s physical approach.
New York Islanders vs. New Jersey — October 3
Another divisional game with important points available before either team has found its rhythm.
Montreal vs. Carolina — October 6
A young Canadiens roster gets an early test against a difficult Carolina team.
Tampa Bay vs. Washington — October 3
Two veteran Eastern Conference clubs attempting to prove they remain part of the championship conversation.
Winnipeg vs. Boston — October 2
A tough, structured matchup between two teams that rarely give opponents much room.
A New 84-Game Era Begins
The 2026-27 campaign will also introduce an expanded 84-game regular season, replacing the 82-game format that had been used for most seasons since 1995-96.
The additional games will affect more than the standings.
Teams will have to manage increased travel, player workloads and difficult stretches more carefully. Those extra games could also create additional rivalry matchups and make roster depth even more important.
Once the entire schedule is revealed, one of the biggest things to watch will be how the league fits those additional games into the calendar—and which teams receive the toughest travel and back-to-back combinations.
The Full Schedule Arrives Tomorrow
Home openers provide the first taste, but the real schedule analysis begins tomorrow.
The NHL will release the complete 2026-27 regular-season schedule on Thursday, July 16 at 1 p.m. ET.
That is when fans will learn the dates of the biggest reunions, rivalry games, holiday matchups, lengthy road trips and potential playoff rematches.
For now, the countdown has officially begun.
