What began as a former teammate telling stories about Evander Kane’s time with the San Jose Sharks has turned into one of the messiest NHL social-media battles of the offseason.

In a matter of days, former Sharks forward Kurtis Gabriel has accused Kane of routinely disrespecting team standards, described him as a “typical bully,” alleged that teammates eventually wanted him gone, and shared another bizarre story involving damaged hockey sticks.

Kane responded by warning that he has his own stories — and “receipts” — to tell.

Then Patrick Marleau’s family entered the conversation.

And on Wednesday, September 2, Kane finally started producing some of those receipts.

Here is how the entire situation unfolded.

It started with Kurtis Gabriel

The story really began on August 30 when Gabriel appeared on Episode 138 of the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast.

Gabriel and Kane were teammates in San Jose during the 2020-21 season. Gabriel’s appearance lasted well over 30 minutes, but the Kane portion begins at approximately the 2:57 mark of the three-hour podcast. 

Gabriel painted an extremely unflattering picture of what Kane was allegedly like behind closed doors.

One of his biggest complaints involved team meetings.

According to Gabriel, players were expected to arrive early and dress professionally. Kane, he claimed, regularly came through the door after meetings had already begun, sometimes wearing flip-flops and a tracksuit while other players were dressed in suits.

Gabriel said the behaviour bothered him enough that he would confront Kane about it.

He also characterized Kane as a “typical bully” and argued that Kane’s talent allowed him to get away with behaviour other players could not.

Gabriel eventually made an even more damaging claim: despite Kane being one of San Jose’s most productive players at the time, teammates reached a point where they no longer wanted him around.

“I’ve never seen such a great player and a team say, ‘We don’t want him here,’” Gabriel said. 

Gabriel did provide some nuance.

He acknowledged that Kane was going through difficult circumstances during that period and suggested people who are hurting can sometimes act out. Gabriel also admitted he had experienced his own struggles and made mistakes himself.

But his overall assessment of Kane’s impact on the dressing room was brutal.

Gabriel warned Kane before the clips came out

Interestingly, Gabriel did not simply surprise Kane with the interview.

On August 30, Gabriel publicly revealed that he had sent Kane an Instagram message before clips from the podcast began circulating.

Gabriel told Kane that he had discussed him while talking about his life and Sharks experiences and that clips would be released shortly. He also made it clear he stood behind what he had said.

According to Gabriel, Kane read the message.

There was initially no response. 

That changed quickly.

Kane warns everyone he has “receipts”

As Gabriel’s comments spread around hockey social media, Kane responded on August 31 with a message that sounded much less like a denial and much more like a warning.

Kane wrote that he could not wait until he decided to share his own “truths,” adding that his version would include “facts, receipts, and the actual truth.”

He then accused people of becoming too comfortable publicly discussing him while relying on his silence.

Kane finished by suggesting there were “plenty” of explosive stories involving “plenty of names.” 

Suddenly, the story was no longer simply about Gabriel discussing a former teammate.

Kane was essentially warning that if people wanted to reopen the San Jose chapter of his career, he was prepared to reopen it too.

Gabriel answers back — and tells another wild Sharks story

Gabriel wasn’t intimidated.

On September 1, he posted another response directed toward Kane and reiterated that he had attempted to contact him before everything went public.

Gabriel said he was willing to have the conversation privately or publicly.

Then he added another story.

Gabriel recalled a Sharks road trip to Minnesota during the 2020-21 season. He said he was scratched from the lineup and claimed that teammates, including Tomas Hertl and Erik Karlsson, had been chirping Kane during the morning skate.

According to Gabriel’s account, Kane was frequently teased about his gambling-related problems at the time.

Gabriel then alleged he heard Kane became so upset that he went into the locker room, gathered some teammates’ sticks and began damaging them with the equipment used for cutting sticks until trainers intervened.

Importantly, Gabriel described parts of the incident as something the players heard had happened, rather than presenting himself as a witness to every part of the morning-skate confrontation.

Gabriel further alleged that Kane remained at the arena, ordered pizza and later started the game.

Gabriel claimed Kane barely skated during his opening shift before returning to the bench, although he said Kane eventually began playing normally. 

The actual April 16, 2021 game against Minnesota can be verified. Kane and Patrick Marleau were both in San Jose’s lineup, while Gabriel was listed as a healthy scratch. Kane ultimately played 21:47 and scored a shorthanded goal in San Jose’s 3-2 loss. 

The behind-the-scenes details, however, remain Gabriel’s account and have not been independently established.

Then Patrick Marleau’s family enters the feud

Just when it seemed the story could not become much more personal, Gabriel shared correspondence involving Christina Marleau, the wife of Sharks legend Patrick Marleau.

Gabriel promoted the message as another “receipt” and specifically stated that Christina had approved him posting it publicly. San Jose Hockey Now documented the post on September 1. 

According to the message Gabriel shared, Christina claimed Patrick had a “strong disgust” for Kane.

The allegation went further.

She reportedly said Patrick did not want his children entering the Sharks dressing room when Kane was around. 

That immediately made the story much bigger.

Marleau isn’t simply another former Shark. He is the NHL’s all-time leader in games played and one of the most recognizable players in franchise history. 

There is also an important distinction here: the public allegation came from Christina Marleau and was shared by Gabriel. Patrick Marleau himself has not been the person publicly posting these accusations in this current exchange.

But Kane clearly viewed the claim about Patrick’s feelings toward him as something he could challenge.

And this time he didn’t just promise receipts.

He posted one.

Kane brings up Marleau’s son

On September 2, Kane responded directly to the “strong disgust” characterization.

And his response was easily the most pointed statement he has made since this feud began.

Kane wrote:

“Strong disgust”? That’s an interesting way to describe someone who had no problem reaching out to me when he needed help with your son’s school project. I graciously obliged, and your husband was appreciative enough to send me a very nice thank you afterward. So either his “strong disgust” disappears when I’m useful to him, or the story you’re telling doesn’t quite match reality.

Kane also shared screenshots of messages connected to the school project, including what has been reported as a private thank-you message from Patrick Marleau. 

The screenshots circulating Wednesday appear to date back to April 2021 — meaning Kane and Marleau were still Sharks teammates at the time. NHL records confirm both players were in San Jose’s lineup during that period. 

That does not automatically disprove Christina Marleau’s claim.

Someone could dislike a teammate’s dressing-room behaviour while still being cordial with him or asking him to participate in a controlled school project.

But Kane’s point is obvious.

If Patrick’s feelings toward him were supposedly so strong that he did not want his children around Kane, why was Kane also considered an appropriate person to personally help one of those children with a school assignment?

That contradiction is now at the centre of the debate.

And we may only be at the beginning

There are now several different layers to this story.

Gabriel says Kane regularly showed up late, ignored team standards, bullied people and damaged the culture of the Sharks dressing room.

Gabriel has also told more specific stories about alleged incidents involving Kane and his teammates.

Christina Marleau says Patrick had an intense dislike for Kane and did not want the couple’s children around him in the locker room.

Kane says that description doesn’t line up with his own interactions with Patrick — and he has now posted messages to support his argument.

The most important thing is separating claims from established facts.

Gabriel’s locker-room stories are Gabriel’s account. Christina Marleau’s description of her husband’s feelings is Christina’s account. Kane’s messages show communication between himself and Patrick Marleau, but they cannot tell us everything about the relationship between the two players.

What they do show is that Kane wasn’t bluffing when he said he had receipts.

And that could be what makes this story particularly interesting moving forward.

Kane warned that multiple names could eventually become involved if he decides to fully tell his side of his NHL experiences.

Only a couple of days later, one of the biggest names in San Jose Sharks history has already been dragged into the conversation.

Gabriel appears unwilling to back down.

Kane suddenly appears willing to answer allegations publicly.

And after Wednesday’s post involving Marleau’s son and the old messages between Kane and Patrick, this has gone far beyond a former teammate telling a funny locker-room story on a podcast.

The question now is whether this is where it finally stops — or whether Kane is just getting started with the “receipts” he promised.

Because if there really are “plenty of names attached,” the Patrick Marleau chapter might only be the first one.
